Do you need a dumpster permit in Chicago?

If the dumpster sits in the public way, such as the street or an alley, Chicago requires a permit, and the dumpster company applies for it, not you. On private property, the City's dumpster permit does not apply.

Who pulls the permit

Chicago's municipal code, section 10-28-799, requires a dumpster permit when a dumpster occupies the public way. The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) says the duty falls on the companies that provide the dumpsters. That makes it the hauler's job, not the customer's.

WasteBox serves the Southwest Side of Chicago only, and we handle the permit on those jobs.

What the City charges

CDOT's fee schedule is valid as of January 1, 2026. It sorts dumpsters into Class A, which is 30 cubic yards or less. Our largest box is a 30 yard, so every WasteBox size is Class A.

The placement fee is the same for an alley, a curb lane, a parkway or a sidewalk. The Central Business District (CBD) pays double. Chicago defines the CBD in its municipal code, section 9-4-010.

Per month$100$200

The application fee

There is also a one-time application fee that covers processing. In 2026 it is $22.60 on a residential street and $56.51 on an arterial street outside the CBD. Inside the CBD it is $92.63. The schedule says the fee may rise with CPI each year, so check chicago.gov for the current number.

Ask us about the City fees when you call.

Where the dumpster has to sit

The permit ties the dumpster to a street address. The provider has to place it immediately adjacent to the property at that address. If a fire hydrant or something else blocks the spot, the provider may change the location on the permit at no extra fee.

Tell us where you want it when you call. An alley, a parking spot and a driveway all work differently, and the driveway protection page covers the driveway side.

What happens without a valid permit

The City can remove a dumpster that has no valid permit, lacks the required ID or sits at the wrong address, and it charges the cost to the provider. The ordinance also treats each day a violation exists as a separate offense. That is why a hauler who pulls the permit before delivery matters.

What changes on private property

CDOT says this permit is not necessary if the dumpster goes on private property, and it adds that other permits may apply. If you have a driveway or a private lot, tell us, and ask us about any other permits when you call.

Outside Chicago, every village sets its own rules. Our dumpster permits page covers what we have read for Orland Park, Oak Lawn, Naperville and Joliet.
