Permits and rules
Do You Need a Permit for a Dumpster?
A dumpster on your own driveway usually needs no permit, but one in the street often does, and every town sets its own rules. In Chicago the dumpster company pulls the street permit, not you.
Does a dumpster on my driveway need a permit?
Usually not. HomeGuide says a dumpster on your own private property will likely not require a permit, though your HOA might have stricter rules.
Some towns say so in writing. Orland Park says permits are not required for a dumpster on a private driveway. Chicago's transportation department says its dumpster permit is not necessary on private property, and adds that other permits may apply.
If your town is not listed on this page, call your village hall or building department before you book. Have your street address ready when you call us too.
What are the rules for a dumpster in the street?
A street, parkway, sidewalk or alley is public property, and towns treat it differently from your driveway. Oak Lawn, for one, allows a street dumpster only in cases of hardship.
HomeGuide says you might need a permit if the dumpster sits directly in the street, on a sidewalk or on any public property. It says approval can take up to three days. It also says to ask your dumpster company whether they pull the permit.
The town sections below show what each village says on its own site.
Chicago dumpster permits
A dumpster in Chicago's public way needs a permit from the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). The rule applies to the companies that provide dumpsters. That means the hauler pulls the permit, not you.
WasteBox handles it for Southwest Side jobs.
If the dumpster sits on private property, CDOT says this permit is not necessary, though other permits may apply.
CDOT's 2026 fee schedule sets the placement fee for a dumpster of 30 cubic yards or less. Our largest dumpster is a 30 yard, so every WasteBox size fits that class. The placement fees double inside the Central Business District (CBD), which Chicago defines in its municipal code. WasteBox serves the Southwest Side only.
| Placement fee, 30 cubic yards or less | Outside the CBD | Inside the CBD |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 days (alley, curb lane, parkway or sidewalk) | $50 | $100 |
| Per month | $100 | $200 |
Chicago application fee and placement rules
The City also charges a one-time application fee. In 2026 it is $22.60 on a residential street and $56.51 on an arterial street outside the CBD. Inside the CBD it is $92.63. The schedule says the fee may rise with CPI each year. Ask us about the Chicago permit cost when you call.
The dumpster has to sit next to the street address on the permit. If a fire hydrant or something else blocks that spot, the provider can change the location on the permit at no extra fee.
The City can fine a violation of its dumpster ordinance, and each day counts as a separate offense. It can also remove a dumpster that has no valid permit and bill the provider.

Orland Park dumpster permits
Orland Park says a dumpster is permitted for a one-month period but must be placed on a private driveway. The village also says permits are not required.
The village sets limits. A unit can be no taller than eight feet above grade, and it must sit at least five feet from any lot line. The maximum total unit size is 768 cubic feet in residential zoning districts.
768 cubic feet is about 28 cubic yards, so a 30 yard box is over that number on its face. Ask us which size works for your lot before you book.

Oak Lawn dumpster permits
Oak Lawn's code says a dumpster, when it is not being transported, must be on private property. A violation can bring a fine of up to $500. More on dumpster rental in Oak Lawn.
There is one exception, for undue hardship, where a dumpster cannot reasonably go on private property. You notify the village public works department, which decides whether it can go on a street or parkway. These conditions apply:
- The dumpster sits on skids so it does not damage the roadway or parkway.
- Warning barriers with flashing lights surround it.
- It can be on the roadway or parkway only between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Naperville dumpster permits
Naperville handles work in the public right of way through a right-of-way permit. The permit page tells you to show the proposed dumpster location on the map. It has no separate dumpster section and no dumpster fee.
On that page, most permits cost $88, most need a $5,000 bond, and plan reviewers need 14 calendar days. Permits that need excavation or a temporary street or alley closure cost $120.
The page is about the public right of way, so it does not answer the driveway question. Call the village before you plan a street spot. More on dumpster rental in Naperville.
Joliet dumpster permits
Joliet's Engineering division issues permits for dumpster placement. It also issues permits for over-weight and over-sized trucks.
The Engineering page lists no fee, size limit or time limit for dumpsters, so call Joliet Engineering before you plan a street spot. More on dumpster rental in Joliet.
What about other towns?
Every village writes its own rules. We list only what we have read on the town's own site. For any other town, call your village hall or building department before you book. You can see where we deliver on our service areas page.

- Lemont: Trash containers or dumpsters shall not be placed on streets unless approved in advance by the building official. Where possible they must be at least five feet from the curb. Source.
- Lombard: Right-of-way placement needs Public Works permission and a demonstrated difficulty fitting it on private property. In the B5 Central Business District, one dumpster per property may be allowed with written approval. Source.
- Manhattan: In the same guidance, dumpsters are not allowed in the right-of-way (sidewalk) or in the streets. For PODS, units shall not be placed on village property or public right of way. Source.
- New Lenox: Not allowed. Dumpsters cannot be on the sidewalk, parkway, street, or in the public right-of-way. Source.

- Riverside: Dumpsters on a permitted building site may not be located on the public right-of-way. Separately, obstructing a street, alley or parkway with building materials or other articles needs a written permit from the village manager. Temporary storage containers need permission from the Public Works Director to sit on public right-of-way. Source.
- Romeoville: Dumpsters used for construction or debris removal cannot be placed or parked on or in a public street or public way. Source.
- Warrenville: The right-of-way rule makes any object placed in the public right-of-way an encroachment, and only permitted encroachments are lawful. This general rule does not name dumpsters. Source.
- Western Springs: A construction dumpster shall not be located in the public right of way or block the public sidewalk. Any container of 1 cubic yard or larger on the roadway or right-of-way needs written approval from the Community Development or Municipal Services Director. Source.
- Woodridge: Contractors working under a building permit may not place trash containers or dumpsters on streets. This sentence is in the contractor safety section, not the residential roll-off rule. Source.
- Worth: Street or parkway placement is allowed only in cases of undue hardship, after notifying the public works department. The dumpster must sit on skids, have flashing warning barriers, and be on the roadway or parkway only between 8 am and 4 pm. Source.

Who gets the Chicago dumpster permit, me or the dumpster company?
The dumpster company. CDOT's rule applies to companies providing dumpsters in the public way.

Usually not, but check with your village. Orland Park says no permit is required for a driveway dumpster, and CDOT says its dumpster permit does not apply on private property.
How much does a Chicago dumpster permit cost?
Outside the CBD, CDOT's 2026 schedule lists $50 for 1 to 3 days or $100 for a month, for a dumpster of 30 cubic yards or less. Inside the CBD it is $100 and $200. There is also a one-time application fee, $22.60 on a residential street.
Can a dumpster go in the street in Oak Lawn?
Only in cases of undue hardship, after you notify the public works department. The dumpster needs skids and flashing warning barriers, and it can be on the roadway or parkway only from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
How long does a street permit take?
It depends on the town. Naperville's page says plan review takes 14 calendar days. HomeGuide says approval can take up to three days. Ask your village.
How long can a dumpster stay on the street or driveway?
