What size dumpster do I need for carpet removal?

Start with square feet

Bagster says its 3 cubic yard bag holds about 900 square feet of carpet or tile (Bagster, checked October 12, 2026). Our 6 yard box has twice that space, so by that rate it holds about 1,800 square feet of carpet by itself. That is an estimate from another company's figure.

Pad, tack strips and baseboards take room too. If you are clearing a whole floor with all of that, step up to the 12 yard.

Weight: dry and wet

Budget Dumpster says carpet can weigh anywhere from 5 pounds to 20 pounds per square yard. It also says carpet and other absorbent materials become heavier when wet (checked October 12, 2026).

By our arithmetic, 1,000 square feet is about 111 square yards, so roughly 555 to 2,220 pounds. That is a quarter ton to about one ton. The 6 yard has no ton limit. The 12 yard allows 3 tons.

Tips

• Cut carpet into strips and roll them so they pack tight.
• Keep the pile dry. A wet load is heavier and harder to lift.
• Pull tack strips with care. The nails are sharp.
• Put the box close to the door to shorten the carry.
