What size dumpster do I need to remove a deck?

Most deck tear-outs fit a 12 or 16 yard dumpster. If you are also breaking out concrete footings or a slab, that concrete goes in a separate 6 yard box.

Pick the size by the deck

Deck wood is mostly a space job. Count the boards, rails, stairs and joists, then size the box to the pile. WM's pages list its 10 and 12 yard boxes for small deck demolitions (WM, checked October 12, 2026). We rent a 12 yard too, and we also have a 16 yard for bigger decks.

What fits where

These are our starting points, not a promise. Tell us the deck size and height when you call and we choose with you.

  • 12 yard: a small deck or a ground level platform with a few steps.
  • 16 yard: a larger deck with rails, stairs and a skirt.
  • 20 yard: a big deck, or a deck plus the pergola or shed beside it.

Check the longest board

Our 12 yard is 12 feet long, the 16 yard is 14 feet and the 20 yard is 18 feet. Long beams and rails can poke out of a short box. Cut them down, or pick the longer box. Never stack above the walls.

Footings and concrete are separate

Concrete, brick and dirt go in the 6 yard box only, because of weight. If your deck sits on concrete footings or a pad, order a 6 yard for that. See concrete dumpster rental.

Tips for a clean tear-out

Always place the container where I ask them to. Konrad Chrzaszcz, Google review.

  • Take the deck apart from the top down and stack as you go.
  • Cut long pieces so they lie flat in the box.
  • Keep the area around the box clear for the truck.
  • Tell the driver where you want the box. Customers say drivers place it where they ask.

Questions people ask

What size dumpster do I need for a deck?

Most decks fit a 12 or 16 yard. A big deck with stairs and rails may need the 20. Call with the size and we choose.

Can I put the deck footings in the same dumpster?

No. Concrete, brick and dirt go in the 6 yard only. Order a 6 yard box for the footings.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

One flat rate covers a full week, with a three day grace period on top. Most deck jobs fit inside that.

Can I get the box the same day?

We offer same-day delivery. Call 630-850-0770 on a weekday morning.

Is a bag enough for a small deck?

A 3 cubic yard bag fits a very small job. Past that, a box is simpler. See our bag vs dumpster comparison.
