Illinois EPA calls refrigerators, freezers, ranges, water heaters, air conditioners and similar large appliances white goods. White goods that have not had their components removed have been banned from landfills since July 1, 1994.

The components named are mercury switches, CFC refrigerant gas (Freon) and PCBs.
