Can You Put a TV in a Dumpster?

Yes. WasteBox accepts TVs and other electronics in its dumpsters. Illinois bans electronics from landfills, so mention them when you call.

What Illinois says about TVs

Illinois EPA says that effective January 1, 2026, covered electronic devices are banned from landfills. Televisions are on the list. The ban applies to households, businesses, schools and government agencies.

The state's reason is that electronics contain hazardous materials, and it names lead and mercury among them.

Other ways to get rid of a TV

You can also take it to an electronics collection point. Illinois EPA points to its Beyond the Bin map. Check the Electronics layer to find sites near you.

Call first. Illinois EPA says collectors do not all accept every device type.

A broken TV still counts. Illinois EPA says damaged, non-working or outdated covered devices are accepted.

Cost: most public recycling programs are free for consumers. Public sites and one-day events may charge fees only for TVs and monitors.
