Can You Put Branches in a Dumpster?
Branches count as yard waste in Illinois, and the state bans yard waste from landfills. WasteBox takes branches and yard waste in a box.
Why branches are a problem
Illinois law bans grass and woody trimmings, leaves and tree limbs from landfills, and Illinois EPA dates that ban to July 1, 1990. Kane County says the state law covers other material from caring for lawns, shrubbery, vines and trees too.
Kane County splits this waste into yard waste and brush. Yard waste includes twigs and small branches, generally under 3 inches across. Brush is woody debris, including larger tree and shrub branches or limbs.
What to do with branches instead
Illinois EPA lists these options: mulch grass clippings, leaves and wood chips, take the waste to a permitted compost facility, or join a community collection.
Kane County says almost all municipal hauling agreements include a yard waste program, and generally those programs run from April to November. Check with your hauler or village.
